29 January 2013 – Three SSC scholars, Sarah Amsler, David McAleavey and Mike Ward appeared on Richard Keeble’s weekly programme, Behind the Headlines, on Siren FM (http://www.sirenonline.co.uk/). The show invites people in to discuss current issues across a range of newspapers to create space for public dialogue and reflect critically on the role of the news media itself in shaping our understandings of the world — and to share good music. We attended to concerns about the on-going but recently reported conflict in Mali, the impact of high-speed rail on local communities in the UK, the high school teachers’ boycott of standardised testing in Washington state, the withdrawal of funding for the arts in Lincoln and political representations of immigration, and the importance of humanising our understandings of the world around us.

You can listen to the recording of the show here – it is a big file, so please be patient if it takes a few seconds to download. We thought it was so great that we are percolating some new ideas for working with community radio. Stay tuned.
